What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a cycle made up of two parts. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that show up uninvited and cause real distress. Compulsions are the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals you do to relieve that distress or to prevent something bad from happening — washing, checking, counting, reassurance-seeking, or reviewing things over and over in your mind.

The trouble is that compulsions only quiet the fear for a moment, and then the cycle starts again. Over time, it can consume hours of your day and leave you feeling exhausted and ashamed.

OCD shows up in many forms, including:

Whatever shape your OCD takes, it does not mean something is wrong with you. It means a part of you is working very hard to keep you safe.

Signs and Symptoms of OCD

OCD affects everyone differently, but common signs include:

How IFS Helps with OCD

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy offers a gentle, compassionate way to heal OCD. Rather than treating obsessions and compulsions as enemies to be defeated, IFS helps you understand the parts of you that are caught in the cycle.

From an IFS perspective, compulsions are the work of protective parts — parts of you that are genuinely trying to manage overwhelming fear and keep you safe. A checking part may be desperately trying to prevent disaster. A washing part may be working to keep you from harm. These parts mean well, even when their methods leave you depleted.

Instead of forcing you to confront your fears, we get curious about these parts with patience and compassion. We get to know what they’re afraid of, what they’re protecting, and what they need in order to feel safe. As these protective parts come to trust that you can meet life from your calm, grounded core Self, they no longer have to work so hard — and the grip of the obsession-compulsion cycle begins to loosen.

This is gentle, paced work. You’re always in control, and we never move faster than feels right for you. To learn more about this approach, visit my IFS therapy page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have OCD?
OCD usually shows up as a cycle of obsessions — unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress — followed by compulsions, the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals you do to relieve that distress. If you find yourself stuck in time-consuming loops of checking, washing, counting, reassurance-seeking, or mental reviewing, and it's interfering with your daily life, it may be OCD. A consultation can help you understand what you're experiencing.
Can therapy really help OCD?
Yes. OCD is highly treatable, and many people find meaningful, lasting relief through therapy. As a Certified IFS Therapist, I help you understand the inner parts driving the obsession-compulsion cycle, so you can find relief at the root rather than just managing symptoms on the surface.
Do I have to confront my fears head-on?
No. My approach is gentle and parts-based — we never force you to confront your fears or push you into anything you're not ready for. Instead, we get curious about the protective parts behind your compulsions and build trust with them, so they can relax at a pace that feels safe to you.
How is your approach to OCD different?
Many OCD approaches focus on pushing through fear. I work from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective, which is gentler and curiosity-driven. We treat compulsions as the work of protective parts that are trying to keep you safe, and we help those parts feel understood so the cycle can ease — without forcing or fighting yourself.
Does OCD ever fully go away?
OCD looks different for everyone. Many people experience significant, lasting relief and reach a point where obsessions and compulsions no longer run their lives. Even when some tendencies remain, you can develop a very different relationship with them — one where they hold far less power. We'll set goals together and adjust as you grow.
How long does OCD therapy take?
Every person's journey is different. Some people notice meaningful relief within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support, especially when OCD is tied to deeper wounds or long-standing patterns. We'll regularly check in on your progress and adjust our work together to fit your needs.
Do you offer online OCD therapy?
Yes. I offer telehealth sessions for clients throughout Virginia and Florida, so you can receive support from the comfort of your own home. In-person sessions are also available at my Manassas, VA office.
Is OCD therapy covered by insurance?
I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. My fee is $215 per session. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. I'm happy to discuss payment options during our consultation.
